Creative Wales Award 2012

I have been awarded a major Creative Wales Award by the Arts Council of Wales for a 12 month period spanning April 2012 to March 2013.

My project consists of a year long programme of experimentation and dialogue, which will culminate in both text and prototype artworks. Working from my Cardiff studio, I plan to make a series of large scale opalescent light screens using both natural and artificial light, so that I can experiment with backlit, translucent objects and the illuminated plane / surface in an architectural context. The process will start in the studio but as the project develops, I plan to build a ‘Light Lab’. This will be a room or building as a purpose made venue for a ‘wall of light’.

In addition to the material processes of the studio based work, I want to open up dialogues with others as a way of getting critical feedback on my work and examine the conceptual framework that underpins what I do. I plan to discuss my work with artist Neville Gabie, Dr Helen Sear, Reader in Photography and Fine Art at  the University of Wales, Newport and architect Jonathan Vining. These dialogues will provide a narrative backdrop to the experimental processes in the studio and this mixture of the practical and the conceptual will be a way of reinvigorating my practice using both my head and my hands.
